Living in Sicily: The Brutally Honest Pros & Cons
Before you pack your bags and buy a €1 house, here is the unvarnished truth about daily life as an expat on the island of Sicily.
Sicily is intoxicating. With its Greek ruins, active volcanoes, turquoise beaches, and culinary mastery, it's easy to fall in love while on vacation. Furthermore, it is the undisputed capital of the €1 house phenomenon, offering incredibly cheap real estate.
But living there full-time is different from a two-week holiday. If you are considering relocating, you need to understand both sides of the coin.
The Pros
Climate & Landscape
300 days of sunshine a year. You can ski on Mount Etna in the morning and swim in the Mediterranean in the afternoon.
Incredibly Low Cost of Living
Rent is 40-60% cheaper than northern Italy. You can buy historic homes for €1 or fully renovated ones for under €50,000.

Food Quality
The produce is hyper-local and cheap. Farm-to-table isn't a trend here; it's just how life works.
The Cons
Bureaucracy & Speed
Things move very slowly. "Domani" (tomorrow) often means "sometime next week." Patience is mandatory.
Infrastructure
Public transport outside major cities is poor. You absolutely need a car to live in a rural €1 house town.
Digital Connectivity
While cities have fiber, rural towns might struggle with stable high-speed internet, requiring Starlink.
What About Safety?
When people think of Sicily, they often think of old mafia movies. The reality today is very different. Violent crime rates in Sicily are extremely low, much lower than in major US or UK cities. The most common crime is petty theft (pickpocketing) in crowded tourist areas like Palermo or Catania. In the small towns where €1 houses are sold, crime is virtually non-existent. People leave their doors unlocked.
